Succession and Transition Planning: How to Begin

Thursday, September 4, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Many organizations have experienced an employee with extensive institutional knowledge leaving (for a job change or retirement) their organization, and the organization being uncertain about how to ensure a smooth transition. During such times, important information can often fall through the cracks, and staff may spend countless hours onboarding and training new employees who have big shoes to fill and don’t know where to begin.

This workshop is designed to provide an overview, practices, and tools to help organizations navigate these transitions more smoothly through effective transition, succession, and backup planning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn approaches and techniques for how to start succession and back up planning
  • Exposure to tools that may help with succession and back up planning
  • Learn from examples of case studies of what to do and not to do

Intended Audience:

  • Nonprofit leaders preparing to retire
  • Operations staff
  • Middle management with teams
  • Staff who feel they need a backup when they want to take time off but that infrastructure does not exist
