About

The Animal Care Society (ACS) was founded in 1984 as Louisville, Kentucky’s first NO-KILL animal adoption agency for dogs and cats and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. ACS is a privately funded, volunteer driven organization whose financial support comes solely through individual memberships, donations, adoption fees, corporate sponsorships, grants/foundations and fundraising events.

Our mission is to find new, safe, and loving forever homes for surrendered dogs and cats. We provide all necessary medical care throughout their stay at our shelter.  Because our space is limited and we do not practice euthanasia, a pet's age, temperament and health are factors we must assess before taking in any pet.

Since our inception, our shelter has taken in thousands of dogs and cats that, for various reasons, found themselves in need of new homes. ACS makes a commitment to each and every one of these precious fur babies that they will be safe, well-cared for, and much loved until the perfect new home can be found – no matter how long it takes.

ACS accepts and re-homes hundreds of animals each year. We accept animals from owners who can no longer keep, or take care of them, as well as from surrounding area high-kill shelters. Animals stay at our shelter until they have a home. Applicants wishing to adopt pets from our facility, must complete an application and be screened through adoption interviews and reference checks.

The Animal Care Society relies heavily on contributing members and dedicated volunteers to complete its mission. Our members provide much needed financial support, while our volunteers play a key role in the day-to-day care of our animals. The warmth and affection that our furry guests provide, makes membership and volunteering with ACS an emotional and meaningful experience.

The Animal Care Society also promotes retention of animals with our adopting families and provides animal education for the community at large. Our main fundraisers, Bark in the Park (in its 17th year), The Bow Wow Meow Boutique, The Annual Benefit Bash (in its 6th year) and The Re-Tail Thrift Shop raise much needs funds and enhance our presence in the community.
